The New Zealand Ministry of Education has identified Reading, Writing and Mathematics as vital components of the National Curriculum. New Zealand schools are required to assess student performance in each of these subjects against nationally expected standards for each child at a specific age and to report their results to the Ministry each year. Students are to be identified as ‘Above’, ‘At’, ‘Below’, or ‘Well Below’ standard. For more information, see National Standards.
