Core Curriculum

Our Learning Philosophy

At Ōpua School, we nurture confident, capable learners who face challenges with curiosity, determination, and self-belief. Our students are encouraged to take responsibility and be positive influences, always striving to do their best. As a collaborative learning community, we balance school-wide consistency with flexible, student-centred teaching.

Core curriculum English and Mathematics

At Ōpua School, structured learning in the core curriculum provides students with a clear, consistent framework that builds skills progressively over time. Aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, this explicit approach to teaching supports deep understanding, ensures continuity across year levels, and enables learners to confidently meet key milestones.  By building a strong foundation in the essential areas of English and Mathematics (literacy and numeracy), we empower our students to thrive both academically and personally.

English

Our structured literacy approach, based on the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA), strengthens foundational literacy skills through systematic, explicit instruction in phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. This evidence-based method equips all learners with the essential tools to become confident, capable readers and writers. We aim to nurture:

  • Competent readers who comprehend, analyse, and enjoy a wide range of texts.
  • Confident writers who express ideas clearly and creatively across various contexts.
  • Effective communicators who listen actively, speak clearly and engage respectfully in discussions.

Mathematics

In mathematics, we equip students with the skills and confidence to be capable problem solvers and critical thinkers. Our structured programme, aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, ensures clear, progressive learning. We use the PR1ME Mathematics programme to build strong number sense and problem-solving through explicit, scaffolded teaching.

  • Targeted and purposeful teaching tailored to individual learning goals.
  • Hands-on, real-life maths experiences that build relevance and understanding.
  • A mix of collaborative and independent tasks to build confidence, resilience and a growth mindset in their mathematical journey.
