Te Reo
Te Reo Māori & Cultural Learning
At Opua School, we are committed to normalising Te Reo Māori and embedding Māori culture into everyday learning. Through haka, waiata, pūrākau (storytelling), and pōwhiri, we create meaningful connections to Te Ao Māori, ensuring students feel confident and engaged in using the language in daily life.
Kia ora whānau
Our school begins each day with Taumata including himene, karakia, mihimihi, and waiata. Our tamariki have the opportunity to learn and engage in regular kapa haka and to receive basic language instruction as part of our integrated approach to learning. Thanks to Camilla Going and Matua Horihi, our kura has a wonderful Te Ao Māori website that includes: our school karakia, school houses, taumata process, kapa haka songs, and lots of rauemi (resources) that we are using to teach our tamariki.
Ngā mihi nui,
